Sherlock – Hound of Baskerville

I found this episode a little more harder going than the others. It had less play in it, just a bit run of the mill.

It exposed Sherlock as a thief, fraudster and master manipulator rather than using wit and intelligence. I think that Moffat is trying to hard to show us that there is no distinct good vs evil here, that Sherlock is just as sociopathic as Moriarty.

It’s upsetting I think as I had such love for the character of Sherlock, from films, books and this TV series and it’s now painting him (and probably rightly so) as this brutish arsehole who never thinks he is wrong. He was even mean to Mrs Hudson, even after last week going to great lengths to protect her. Ok, he was nicotine deficient, which leaves even the most well spoken of men scratching at the doors like a locked in dog, but that was no excuse for what he did. Again, it seemed like a tactic to illustrate to us lesser beings that Sherlock is devoid of any emotion or any way of reading anything other than facts.

It extremely dehumanised him, which I think was to set up for next weeks episode. We shall see.

Sherlock next airs on BBC1 at 9pm Sunday 15th Jan.

Felix and Murdo

In this sitcom set in Edwardian London, Ben Miller and Alexander Armstrong play a pair of ‘modern’ men who indulge in a drink and drugs spree while simultaneously competing in the 1908 Olympics… with no training whatsoever

I thought that this would be funnier. I found it bland and just boring. There were some funny bits but they also seemed contrived and forced.

The “club” scene, the duel and the rumpy pumpy just seemed an excuse for “modernising” Edwardian London. Although I did enjoy the Rocky Montage when training for the Olympics.

I am unsure if this is even a series, or was just a pilot as I can’t seem to find details of a second episode.

Sherlock – A Scandal in Belgravia

I’ve been waiting for Sherlock to come back to the BBC for what feels like a life time. I am upset that these seem to all be 3 part series, I would like a longer run of  the debonair detective.

The first thing that drew me to Sherlock was the editing style. It is totally different to anything I have seen before. Beautifully paced, witty script writing and direction as well as the way it is lit/coloured and set to music. It is like a fine meal followed by snuggles on the sofa and champagne with the love of your life.

A Scandal in Belgravia is the first of the three parts of Sherlock this year. A bit of a follow on from the last episode sees Moriarty get away with the perfect ring tone for the tone of the event.

Sherlock is bored with the cases he is getting until his brother pulls him (butt naked) to a most prestigious client who wishes to remain anonymous. He is told about his new case, which he takes and meets his match, both mentally and romantically, if Sherlock is even capable of romance.

Their meeting of minds twists and turns into a neat little bow of things you thought were irrelevent filler being the pretty pattern of the package.

Good Vs evil doesn’t exist here, in this episode we see a much darker side of him. That fine line between him and his arch enemy is crossed many times.

Sherlock always leaves me wanting more.

Sherlock next airs on BBC1 at 8.30pm Sunday 8th Jan.
